Psoriasis is caused by an overreaction of the immune system, that causes skin inflammation and skin flaking. In normal skin where psoriasis is not present, new skin cells grow and then shed within about 4 weeks. The skin cells affected by the psoriasis grow at a very rapid rate and do not shed like that of healthy skin cells. Therefore causing a build up of excess skin, which is referred to as psoriasis plaques. It is pronounced as “suh-ry-uh-sus”.
Most of us fear that psoriasis may be contagious, but it is not. Researchers however are still unsure how the disease pass through family members or the genes. Psoriasis is a non-contagious chronic skin condition. It mostly affects the adults rather than younger children and teenagers, but it does not mean there are no situations where it hits these age groups as it happens as well. A person who has psoriasis, certain conditions trigger it to flare-up. (1.) Stress (2.) There are certain types of mental illness with certain medications used in the treatment (3.) Cigarette smoking (particularly in women) (4.) Certain medicines especially for high blood pressures or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs,. (5.) A cold and/or a very dry weather.
Symptoms of psoriasis and its conditions may come and go even if untreated. Also, some people only have a very mild case while others experience far more severe symptoms..
In severe cases, people may experience arthritic symptoms also known as psoriatic arthritis. People with this type of psoriasis, complain of swollen and painful joints. Severe psoriasis may even causes a loss of finger and toe nails, as a result of dead skin building up beneath both surfaces and expelling the nail from the nail bed.
Proper caring of the skin is always a must for those with psoriasis. This includes keeping the skin as moist as possible throughout the day. Psoriasis is a chronic condition and, it may go into remission for long periods of time, in general it is a condition which one must live with forever.
People with severe cases of this psoriasis condition experience depression and a feeling of low-self-esteem. Research has shown that people with severe symptoms have problems engaging in daily activities in the same manner as cancer patients or those with heart disease. Stress largely contributes to psoriasis break outs which leads to a seemingly never-ending cycles of psoriasis flare-ups.
